Information found in the files of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in Washington, D.C.


Joseph Louis Hoey born January 7th. 1852, still living and with a sound mind and a remarkable memory, states that the Hoey-Hoy Family was originally from Scotland.
They went to the north of Ireland, where there with William of Orange. The great grandfather Samuel Hoey was born in Dublin Ireland and later went to Scotland where he married Mary MacNeil.
In about 1770 Samuel Hoey came to Pennsylvania and settled west of Lewistown in the Kishiquoquillas Valley then in Cumberland County but now in Mifflin County, Pa.
In about the first part of April in 1785 Samuel Hoey and his family came to Westmoreland County. There were eight or ten children in his family. During the third month of their sojourn in Westmoreland County in June 1785 their son James Hoy the grandfather of the said above James Louis Hoey, was born.

In 1788 Samuel Hoey purchased the farm which became his homestead in Franklin Township, Westmoreland County Pa., near the present town of Murraysville. and it was this plantation which Samuel Hoey in his will signed 4/22/1814, divided between his daughter Ann Hoy and his son James.

James Hoy, the son, in his will signed 4/25/1826, leaves his share of the plantation which he had received from his father, to his sons James and Joseph but leaves only one dollar to his eldest son and child Samuel, stating that he expects his sister Ann Hoy to make his son Samuel to be her heir. This Samuel, the sone of James Hoy, was the father of the above Joseph Louis Hoey and also of David Edgar Hoey, deceased, father of applicant.

Sameul Hoey who died in 1814, his wife Mary MacNeil Hoey and their son James Hoy are buried in Laird's Church Cemetery in Westmoreland County, Pa. Their son James Hoy married Eleanor Huey and in the cemetery of the Murraysville Presbyterian Church is the record of her tomb stone" In memory of Eleanor relict of James Hoy, who departed this life April 5, 1853 in the 59th, year of her age". She was the daughter of Joseph Howey (Huey) and on the tomb of her sone Joseph, buried very near and on a line with her grave it states "Joseph H. Hoey died May 18, 1880 aged 59 years 6 months and 13 days"
