After being given an eviction notice by his landlord in 1840, in Richland Co., Ohio, was heard to mutter that he'd rather see his family dead than wandering homeless in the woods in the wintertime. Proved to be a man of his convictions. Narrowly escaped lynching, then successfully employed an insanity defense in his subsequent murder trial. The axe that he used cost only nine cents. Why that matters, I don't know, but all the contemporary accounts mention it, so it must be important. Cited by C. W. Bell as the reason why she felt the Bushong family deserved to be memorialized.Carol Willsey Bell

One of the original settlers of Germantown, Pa. who came over on the Concord in 1683. The historic declamation against the evils of slavery was drafted in his house, which was preserved as a national landmark.Nancy Cunard
Upon being given static for taking up with a black New Orleans jazz musician, was heard to mutter that she'd like to "machine-gun all the racists." Emerald's husband, Sir Bache Cunard, understandably avoided his family and spent most of his time hunting. Lived in a nice big house. Only descendants of First Baron Cunard are eligible to inherit, so a "Kind Hearts and Coronets" strategy would not be efficacious for the Ohio branch of the family, even if practical.

George Brinton McClellan
There's a tradition among the descendants of our uncle John McClelland of a connection with the Civil War general and presidential candidate (or at least there's an Alspach cousin in that line who thinks there is). I haven't found evidence of a connection with John, but when I researched Mercer families who might be related to our grandmother Rebecca Mercer, the wife of John's brother David, up popped the General, among the descendants of the Quaker Mercers originating in Aynho (??) England, who I'm pretty sure are ancestral to the Mercers of Columbiana County and Liberty Township in Wood County.that Pyle dude
